Maps of the registration process drawn by people experiencing homelessness who register weekly

2019–present

Drawing the Experience of Registration
These maps are drawn by the men and women of the Chicago 400 to explain the experience of perpetual registration at Chicago Police Headquarters. Because they "lack a fixed address," Illinois state law requires them to report for re-registration every week. The maps detail their weekly journey to the police station and the hours of waiting and processing once they get there.

Drawing gives people a chance to investigate and consider the impact of years of weekly registration and ongoing police contact. By excavating and externalizing their knowledge of this bureaucratic process, the maps allow them to represent it to others.
